Joel Hurwitz says that he usually starts paintings without knowing what he intends to paint, and, as the painting progresses, tells a story using color and form…using heavy brush strokes with so much paint it extends out from the canvas in twists and curves. His paintings are poems with hidden meanings and symbolism adapted from the many cultures he has visited in his travels around the world. A school docent at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, he gives tours to schoolchildren before the museum opens which include hands on art projects directly in front of the original works of art. Joel says he receives inspiration by being around children, who, through their unprejudiced eyes, view and discuss original works of art with him. Joel is also a photographer and sculptor. He is currently sculpting in clay and bronze. His paintings have been exhibited throughout the Bay Area.
